Afternoon tea is loved by all and there is no better venue than Beamish Museum, which is starting to serve up the traditional treat from Mother’s Day (March 26) in true Edwardian style.

Freshly-made sandwiches, home-made scones with clotted cream and seasonal jam, a selection of individual cakes from the museum’s Herron’s Bakery and tea or coffee are on the menu.

It is served in a room next to the museum’s Tea Rooms in The 1900s Town, furnished in the style of an early ice cream parlour with wooden booths and mirrored fixtures. The menu will change with the seasons and gluten and dairy free options are available. Children’s portions will be served.

Denise Hodge, Beamish’s head of food, said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer afternoon tea at Beamish. It’s fantastic that we can give visitors the chance to indulge in a delicious experience in the beautiful setting of our Edwardian Town.

“Whether you’re looking to treat yourself or for a gift for someone special, this is just perfect.”

Afternoon tea at Beamish has been developed by Sarah Gallagher, a catering assistant at the museum.  Sarah is part of the People Development Programme, funded through Arts Council England’s Major Partner Museums.  The programme gives staff the chance to implement their ideas to improve visitors’ experiences, as well as boosting their own skills.

Sarah said: “I can’t believe it’s come together and the hard work has paid off.  All of the staff in the Tea Rooms are looking forward to the start of something new when we serve the first afternoon teas on Mother’s Day.”

Afternoon tea is available every day from March 26 (excluding school holidays and special events) and must be booked in advance.  The cost is £11.95 per person (£8.95 child) for Unlimited Pass holders or £21.95 (£14.95 child) for non-pass holders which includes day admission.  Payment is required at the time of booking.  Afternoon tea gift vouchers are available.
