Yorkshire garden holds second annual show, June 23-25

After the success of last year’s inaugural event, Harrogate’s Harlow Carr plays host to another three-day flower show, set against the backdrop of its stunning gardens.

There is a full programme of talks, demonstrations, and chances to shop for rare plants and unusual gardening paraphernalia at special show prices.

Once you’ve had enough, escape the crowds with a stroll in the garden: don’t miss the Streamside spectacle of dolly-mixture candelabra primulas and almost 8,000 alliums in the Main Border.

Show highlights

  • More than 40 specialist nurseries and garden trade companies, including County Durham’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show multiple gold medal winners Harperley Hall Farm Nurseries with a selection of woodland, alpine and rare perennials will be present.
  • Get advice from garden writer and broadcaster Martin Fish, plus question-and-answer sessions with members of the RHS Garden Advice Service.
  • Talks and demonstrations, including flower arranging with Jonathan Moseley from the BBC’s The Big Allotment Challenge.
  • On Friday, soldiers from the 6 Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corps, Dishforth, who have been working with the NHS, run a ‘boot camp’ for more than 600 schoolchildren. Hundreds of old army boots have been planted and decorated by pupils, along with portable pallet gardens created by military wives.
  • Enjoy tea and cake at Bettys Cafe Tea Rooms or Bettys Tea House (but avoid peak times if you take my advice – the queues are massive).
  • Live big band music.
