Manager follows his nose to find fragrant plant

A new and exclusive scented verbena is being launched by Mr Fothergill’s, developed from a chance seedling found at its Suffolk trial grounds.

Verbena Scentsation flowers from June to October, offering a long season of colour and scent.

Each year, the seed specialist grows more than 2,000 varieties of flower and vegetable seeds to make sure they are up to scratch for home garden performance.

Trials manager Brian Talman was captivated by a particularly sweet fragrance while reviewing summer bedding plants.

The smell of success

His nose led him to an unusual find – an annual verbena, pretty enough for patio pots, but also with the potential to be a scented cut-flower star.

Brian said: “I knew that if this plant passed on its colour and fragrance to its offspring, that we would be onto a winner. Not only was it a very pretty and compact verbena, the scent had to be smelled to be believed.”

Seed collected from the plant proved true to type and just as fragrant. A growing programme was put in place to build seed stocks for launch to the gardening public.

Verbena Scentsation will be available at garden centres and online at www.mr-fothergills.co.uk, in time for the spring sowing season, priced £2.69.
