Easy plants from Mr Fothergill’s – ideal for urban pots

Helping our pollinators survive and prosper should be a must-do for every gardener and it’s easy when you have such stunning perennials as this to choose from.

Mr Fothergill’s is launching three new ranges – Rudbeckia, Echinacea and Monarda, all traditional garden favourites but these varieties are compact, easy for non-gardeners and are ideal to use in urban and suburban gardens.

Five Echinacea varieties

Echinacea from the Meadow Mama Series have bright and unusual coloured flowers with flat petals and prominent central cones in shades of gold and russet brown.

The plants are about 60cm tall and have particularly strong and sturdy stems, so suitable for the border or pots.

There’s a choice of Fiery, Innocent, Laughing, Playful and Sweet Meadow Mama, at £12.95 for three young plants. A collection of all five costs £18.95, with a collection of 10 (two of each) for £29.90, saving £8.

Bee Series Monardas

Monardas well known for attracting bees and butterflies and plants from the Bee Series are no exception. At just 45cm tall, plants are naturally bushy, well-branched and totally mildew free – often a problem with older varieties.

Three varieties on offer are Bee Free, Bee Happy and Bee Lieve, all at £9.95 for three young plants. A collection of all three costs £10.95 – save £5 if ordering a collection of 6 (two of each) for £16.90.

Rudbeckia/Echinacea hybrid

Large-flowered Rudbeckias are generally associated with annual types but plants from the new Smiley Series are fully perennial.

They are a hybrid between an Echinacea and an annual Rudbeckia, resulting in plants which behave as perennials, with the colour and long blooming time of annual types.

At just 50cm tall, they are ideal for the border or patio pots. There’s a choice of Blushing, Giggling and Lemon Smiley with three young plants at £13.95. A collection of all three costs £14.95 and a double collection (two of each) is £22.90, saving £7.

Mr Fothergill’s Emilia Merola said: “We are always very interested in plants which attract pollinating insects to the garden and these new ranges of Echinacea, Monarda and Rudbeckia do just the job.”
