Celebrating show’s 30th anniversary
A garden showcasing the diverse landscapes of Britain will feature at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show (July 3-8) to celebrate one of the BBC’s best-loved shows.
Countryfile’s 30th Anniversary Garden, designed by award-winning designer Ann-Marie Powell, is inspired by the British countryside and will encourage visitors to reconnect with nature.
The garden explores the concealed, yet critically important world that lives on our doorsteps and the wider countryside.
The tiered landscape represents different regions, from the Scottish Highlands, Yorkshire Dales and moors to North Wales, coastal areas and the streams, rivers and coast of the south and Ireland.
Showcasing our countryside
Each area has its own stone, plant and wildlife habitat. For the Scottish Highlands, there will be gabbro boulders, Scot’s pine, Vaccinium myrtillus (blaeberry), Calluna vulgaris and Ligusticum scoticum (Scot’s lovage).
The dales and moors will be bright with Crataegus (hawthorn), rock rose Helianthemum nummularium and wild thyme in weathered limestone.
In North Wales, woodland trees such as Fagus sylvatica, our native beech, will feature alongside slate outcrops and along the coast Crambe maritima will nestle alongside Crithmum maritimum and Glaucium flavum.
Executive editor of Countryfile Bill Lyons said: “For many people, their back garden is their very own piece of the great outdoors – a haven where home life meets wildlife.
Best of Britain in one garden
“We’re grateful to the RHS and to Ann-Marie for their vision in bringing the very best that the whole of Britain has to offer into this one very special garden to celebrate Countryfile’s 30th anniversary.”
Ann-Marie Powell said: “It is both an honour and a joy to create this wonderful garden for Countryfile at one of the biggest and most famous gardening events in the world.
“I hope it encourages people to think about the diversity of plants they can grow in their own gardens wherever they are in the UK to support our precious wildlife and get people to reconnect with nature.”
