Brilliant blooms with fragrance available on the high street

Orchids are the most popular houseplant in the UK, with millions sold every year, mainly due to their ability to flower for up to three months at a time.

However, the most popular – moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) – have been unscented with the emphasis on their large eye-catching blooms.

Now, thanks to British orchid experts Double H Nurseries, three new scented varieties are available from M&S, Waitrose and Tesco – Diffusion, New Life and Sunny Smell.

Boasting their own individual, delicate fragrance, which is sweetest in the morning, the scented moth orchids require the same easy care as their non-scented cousins and flower for a similar time-span.

Chatsworth’s orchid display

Double H teamed up with floral designer Jonathan Moseley to showcase its orchids at RHS Chatsworth Flower Show earlier this month. More than 100 varieties were on show, one of the largest displays of its kind.

The scented orchids are:

  • Diffusion: Rich pink/purple coloured petals. RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM). New for 2018.
  • New Life: White petals tinged with a delicate shade of pink, and yellow ‘lip’. RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM). New for 2018.
  • Sunny Smell: A profusion of petals in a cheerful yellow shade with touches of dark pink. Was shortlisted for RHS Plant of the Year when it was unveiled at RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2016. Has been available in limited supplies since but this year will be more widely available.

Years of development

Mark Riley from Double H said: “As the largest grower of orchids in the country, we know these beautiful plants are much loved, so after years of development we’re excited to be launching these new varieties into shops.

“They look stunning, have similar floral staying power as traditional moth orchids, but also have a wonderfully sweet and delicate scent. Orchid fans will love them.”

Scented moth orchids from Double H Nurseries will be featured on Jonathan Moseley’s British Flower Bus at RHS Harlow Carr (June 22-24); RHS Hampton Court (July 2-8); RHS Tatton (July 18-22); RHS Hyde Hall August 1-5; RHS Rosemoor (August 17-19) and RHS Wisley September 4-9.
