Beautiful and fuss-free roses
Many new gardeners avoid roses, as they think they are difficult to grow but they’re not, as long as they’re well watered when establishing.
David Austin Roses has five beauties suitable for beginners, all English shrub types with different but very beautiful blooms.
They are a variety of heights, colours and perfumes and make lovely gifts.
This rose has large clusters of rich glowing pink flowers, the outer petals curling back to reveal a button eye.
The blooms are produced almost continuously from June to the first frosts and have a medium, warm, spicy Old Rose fragrance.
It’s a particularly healthy rose and stands up to rain well; the blooms do not ball in the rain. Height and spread: 3.5ft x 3.5ft, potted rose £23.50.
Soft orange-red buds open to medium-sized, apricot-cupped rosettes. Flowers are produced almost continuously, are extremely robust and have a lovely fruity Tea scent.
It’s very healthy and matures into an attractive, rounded, bushy shrub with few thorns. Named to mark the centenary of Roald Dahl’s birth, with the colouring reminiscent of the peach in James and the Giant Peach.
£2.50 from the sale of each rose will be donated to Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity. Height and spread: 3.5ft x 3.5ft, potted rose £23.50.
Olivia Rose Austin
A slightly bigger plant, Olivia Rose Austin’s buds open to beautiful, cupped rosettes of an even, mid-pink.
They have a light to medium fruity fragrance. It starts flowering very early and flowers in flushes until well into the autumn.
It forms a very healthy, well-balanced shrub with dark green foliage, height and spread: 4ft x 3.5ft, potted rose £23.50.
Small, single flowers are held in very large heads, like a hydrangea, produced almost continuously from early summer into autumn.
Soft apricot buds open to pure white, with a hint of soft lemon behind the stamens.
Healthy and almost thornless. The growth is bushy and rather upright, height and spread: 4.5ft x 4.5ft, potted rose £23.50.
The Lark Ascending
A tall rose, with graceful, medium-sized, semi-double flowers in apricot, produced from the ground upwards, held in large heads.
They have an open-cup shape, with a central cluster of golden stamens. The light fragrance varies between Tea and myrrh.
It forms an extremely healthy shrub, named after the music by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Height and spread: 5.5ft x 5ft, potted rose £23.50.
