Highlights from 2019’s new introductions
If you’re looking for veg with a difference, the Rob Smith range at Dobies has some interesting new varieties.
Rob’s made it his life’s work to find out-of-the-ordinary, classic and delicious varieties for home gardeners.
This grafted pepper is as pretty as it is sweet. Variegated leaves and a gradually-changing colour make Confetti an eye-catching addition to your garden. The fruits ripen from green-striped to red, creating a real focal point.
Confetti is ideal for growing in small spaces, as it’s happy in containers, and doesn’t need support.
Order Super Plugs by the end of March for delivery mid-April and potted plants by late April for delivery mid-May; 3 super plugs £9.99, 1 potted plant £4.99, 3 potted plants £11.99, save £2.98.
Tomato Ruby Falls
Rob discovered Ruby Falls tomatoes at a specialist breeder last year. It produces slimmer and more compact columns than regular tomatoes, meaning you can get more plants closer together.
The trusses are held away from the plants, making picking easier and the deep red colour and green shoulders make them a beautiful addition to salads. The delicious taste intensifies when cooked.
Ruby Falls is available as super plugs from early April for delivery mid-April and as potted plants by early May for delivery late May; 3 super plugs £9.99, 1 potted plant £4.99, 3 potted plants £11.99 save £2.98.
Merlin is very heavy yielding and easy to grow. Part of Rob’s Grafted Veg range, Merlin will produce one or two delicious fruits at every node.
The plant doesn’t have seeds, so it won’t go bitter and can be grown in a tunnel or your greenhouse. Expect fruits between 12-15cm in size.
