From beefsteak tomatoes to watermelons bred for a northern climate

This season’s still going strong but not in the horticultural industry – they’re well into 2020 already!

Thompson & Morgan’s new retail range arrived on the shelves last month, with more than 50 new seed varieties being launched for the second year in a row.

Here’s a peek at some of the new varieties so gardeners and allotment plot holders can get planning for next year.

New vegetables include:

Tomato Gourmandia F1

This heart-shaped tomato has been named Vegetable of the Year. A beefsteak tomato which produces attractive oxheart-shaped fruits with exceptional flavour, all summer long. Early ripening and extremely productive, you can enjoy Gourmandia from July right through to autumn, the chunky fruits each weighing up to 300g (10oz) when ripe. A firm texture with the juice held well within the flesh, these tomatoes are perfect for slicing and using in sandwiches or as a burger topper. Height: 1.5-1.8m (5-6’). Spread: 50cm (20”), price £3.99.

Dwarf Bean Caledonia

Growing to around 60cm (24″) tall, this bean is compact and high yielding, making it ideal for small gardens or containers. The attractive cream-coloured flowers give this plant ornamental value too. Height: 60cm (24”). Spread: 45cm (18”), price £2.99.

Long, uniform upright stems do not bulb at the base, so thinning is not required, so can fit more into confined spaces or containers. This variety has excellent cold-weather tolerance. Height: 30cm (12”). Spread: 5cm (2”), price £1.99.

Bred specifically for growing in the Northern Europe climate, for growing outside or in the greenhouse (I’d go for the greenhouse). Each plant is capable of producing between 5-6 fruits weighing up to 3-5kg (7-11lbs). These melons have a fresh taste, juicy texture and high sugar content. Height: 30cm (12”). Spread: 4m (13’), price £3.99.

T&M is also launching a number of new seed collections, including Autumn Collections, which aims to show gardeners that you can sow and crop over a much longer season.

There are also new stands in garden centres featuring Packet to Plate grow-your-own varieties and Bred by T&M seed varieties.
