Plantaholics’ nursery: 10% off!
Winning four RHS Chelsea gold medals (2012-14 and 2016) and the President’s Award for 2015 is no mean achievement, but that’s what one County Durham nursery has achieved.
Harperley Hall Farm Nurseries, near Stanley, is a mail order specialist in alpine, woodland and specimen plants – now with my 10% off exclusive voucher code offer (see the advert on Plants home page).
The nursery is now open on Thursdays, Fridays and new for this year, Saturdays from March until the end of October, from 10am-4pm and it’s a treat for the plant obsessed – at very reasonable prices.
I pop up regularly to find a treasure trove of unusual varieties in the huge array of polytunnels, from fully-grown palms to the tiniest alpine.
My past purchases have ranged from alpines (Delosperma) to a Himalayan giant lily (Cardiocrinum giganteum), a banana and a Muscat grape vine.
Even though the nursery’s shut from October to March, you can visit by appointment – call Gary on the number below. There’s also a large mail order section, so you can order at your leisure during the colder months.

Exclusive to Harperley Hall Farm Nurseries are these two Primula, launched at 2016’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Primula vialii Alison Holland has all the same attributes as the usual Primula vialii, but with white flowers. It has green-tinged flower buds that open to pure white, giving a fresh contemporary look.
Primula aurantica Harperley Pink is a candelabra-type Primula with whorls of cerise-pink flowers with a yellow eye on contrasting dark stems.
It’s ideal for a damp, shady area. Clumps well and is easy to grow.
