Dobies introduces Luz de Otono: a first for broad beans
New variety Luz de Otono from Dobies is the first autumn-cropping broad bean made widely available to home gardeners.
A vigorous growing broad bean that shows good cold resistance for overwintering, it produces long, high-quality pods of tasty beans to plant in July for an October-November crop in mild areas. However, it may require some protection later in the year and in colder parts of the country.
Keen gardeners can now grow two crops per year and be cooking with fresh home-grown broad beans in autumn instead of having to use frozen in seasonal dishes.
First autumn-cropping broad bean – young, tender beans
A versatile variety, its young and tender beans can be picked from the plant and eaten raw. Try shelling mature beans for a bright green pop of colour that’s fabulous in risottos or pasta dishes as the weather cools.
They also make the perfect pulse for winter soups, casseroles and stews, or as a vitamin-packed side dish. Broad beans are an excellent source of vegetable protein and fibre, plus they’re rich in folate and B vitamins. These are essential for nerve and blood cell development, cognitive function and energy.
