A new concept for garden centres – and prehistoric plant lovers
If you’re a lover of dinosaurs and their environment, then HSK Exotic Gardens has come up with an innovative idea for gardening retail – the theme garden. The first of these is the Jurassic Garden, taking its inspiration from the golden ‘middle period’ of the Age of the Dinosaurs, running from 201.4 million years ago to approximately 143.1 mya.
The company is one of the UK’s leading importers of exotic plants, especially tree ferns and the ‘thought to be extinct’ Wollemi Pine. The Jurassic Garden will contain these two key species. Flowering plants originated between 149 and 256 million years ago. Mostly, the Jurassic world was a green one, dominated by conifers, cycads, ginkgoes, ferns and tree-like horsetails.
Bringing the concept right up to date, the Jurassic Garden will contain a combination of evergreens, perennials and exotic flowering plants suitable for outdoor areas.
HSK Exotic Gardens was participating in The Garden Press Event 2025 at the Business Design Centre London. The event is open exclusively to the gardening media and allows brands and growers to showcase their new products for the season.
HSK Exotic Gardens – inspiring new families
The idea has been created to meet the changing needs of today’s younger garden owners. They’re increasingly time-poor, well-travelled experience seekers. Now entering into the property market, they are looking for that easy “IKEA” approach to create a talking point garden.
Market research firm Mintel suggests that younger buyers prefer buying plants in supermarkets, DIY stores, and home furnishing retailers. HSK Exotic Gardens plans to help traditional retailers bring this younger audience into gardening.
With this “done for you” concept, they can enjoy the pleasures of a garden tailored to their requirements. Initially, a few large retailers will be offered a show garden installation. Look out for them in garden centres or nurseries as part of a national roadshow.
