Floral displays hit new heights
Harrogate Spring Flower Show is well named, as it hosts Britain’s biggest exhibition of flower arranging and floristry in the Floral Pavilion.
As well as the major installations, there are about 150 individual works of floral art. I couldn’t possibly do them all justice, but here are my favourites… and a massive thanks to Gary Welford for the pictures. For the other classes, gardens and results, here’s my full show review.
Floral Pavilion – Design Movements
The NAFAS Area challenge features large-scale displays inspired by famous design movements. The North East Area took their inspiration from Art Nouveau, Mercia and North Wales paid tribute to Modernism, Northumberland and Durham concentrated on the Classical period and the Scottish Association featured Arts & Crafts.
Class A1: Quintessentially British
Some stunning displays here from flower clubs for their annual competition.
Floral Pavilion – Class A2: Artistic Licence
One of the main flower arranging titles and some fabulous creativity. Lovely use of Anthuriums here.
The future of floristry: colleges and students
Each of the five colleges – Tyne Metropolitan, Askham Bryan, Wigan and Leigh, East Durham and Shipley – has been invited to choose a room and create a fabulous floral display.
I also loved Class B2, ‘Head Turner’, for floristry students of Level 2 or below. You have to love this sugar skull with floral attachment!
Floral Pavilion – The best of the rest
The Floral Pavilion is so huge, and the categories so all-encompassing, that it’s hard to pick favourites. They’re all worthy of merit so congratulations to anyone who displayed their floral art. For more show information, visit www.flowershow.org.uk.
