No garden needed for these ground-breaking varieties
If you’re new to gardening or don’t have a garden at all, you can still have the benefits of lush leaves by growing fresh potted herbs. Suttons has introduced some really innovative varieties for the new season, including a Mushroom Plant and non-invasive mint.
Mushroom Plant (Rungia klossii)
If you love the flavour of mushrooms but don’t like the texture, then the Mushroom Plant is for you. Producing thick and glossy dark green leaves which are crispy and similar to spinach, it’s perfect for introducing the taste of mushrooms to your sandwiches and salads. If cooking the herb, the flavour intensifies when added at the last minute.
With showy little blue flowers in late summer, it’s a lovely addition to the herb garden, especially in a shady spot. Overwinter the Mushroom Plant indoors as an edible houseplant.
Oregano Hot & Spicy
This compact herb is one of the best to use in Mediterranean and Mexican cookery, with one of the strongest Greek oregano tastes. Perfect for a pot with a trailing habit, this is also a good variety for the garden. Features slightly darker leaves than usual and small pink flowers in late summer.
Mint Jessica Sweet Pear
A versatile variety, less invasive as it doesn’t produce runners, so you can plant it in borders and or your herb garden. With a vigorous, upright habit, it will do well in a pot in a sunny spot. With a delicate fruity aroma, it’s just the mint to add to salads, make a refreshing tea, or a sublime mojito!
Sage Grower’s Friend
The professional’s choice for a potted, reliable summer-grown sage, featuring green leaves and slightly red stems. It’s a non-flowering variety, meaning there’s more leaf to harvest, which you can use fresh, dried or even freeze.
Basil D – Fencesil (Genovese)
A new and improved variety packed with all the flavour and strong aroma you’d expect, with added resistance to mildew and fusarium. It’s much easier to grow, giving great results – perfect for beginners. A brilliant basil for making pesto or a garnish for caprese salad.
