More choice for gardeners with expanded product selection

I’ve tested many growing mediums and it’s great that Bathgate Horticulture’s peat-free range is expanding.

Any new peat-free compost on the market is good news. Ranges in garden centres and DIY stores can be limited or too expensive for new gardeners on a budget. I first became aware of Bathgate Horticulture at the Garden Press Event – here’s my round-up of the compost report.

The company’s Champions Blend 50 litre peat-free compost contains a blend of natural certified ingredients. It is manufactured to the Soil Association’s strictest standards. I’ve used this for growing tomatoes in pots before, and it really performs well. It’s a lovely texture that doesn’t dry out too fast and prove impossible to water like some peat-free composts.

New extra-large planter

Now, the premium Champions Blend range includes a new peat-free extra-large planter. And in more good news for container gardeners, a new peat-free version of the Bathgate 50 litre multi-purpose compost is available.

Commercial director Colin Sanders said: “There is a huge drive from the government and environmental charities for peat-free alternatives.

“We are responding with a number of new products that are suitable for all gardeners. They offer the usual exceptional quality our customers have come to expect. We have spent considerable time refining the ingredients, ensuring the right balance of nutrients to optimise performance.”

Environment commitment

Bathgate Horticulture has a strong commitment to the environment. The new products come in fully recyclable bags made with 30 per cent recycled plastic. The conservation work at the company’s site in Arclid, Cheshire, has resulted in an area of outstanding natural beauty and a nature reserve. Home to native wildlife and plants, the site shows how industry can work sympathetically with nature and the environment.
