Expert growers and novices join to show off their monster veg
Viewing the monster veg at Harrogate Autumn Flower Show at Newby Hall, officially known as Battle of the Giants, is my favourite part of the event. Pictures by Gary Welford

In fact, the show hosts several top veg and fruit growing competitions and is a mecca for exhibition stalwarts and novices alike. The categories are:

- Battle of the Giants
- Great for Beginners
- North of England Horticultural Society Fruit & Vegetable Championships
- National Onion Championships in association with the National Vegetable Society together with the North of England Horticultural Society
- Northern Autumn Fruit Show
- National Carrot, Leek and Potato Championships
Top of the draw has to be the National Onion Championships. The world record was broken in 2014 by Tony Glover’s whopper, weighing in at 18lb 11.5oz. The weigh-in is at noon on the first day (Friday). For more on growing giant veg, see my report on growing giant veg. Read about 2017’s show.

Battle of the Giants – onions are the cream of the crop
The winner this year was Peter Glazebrook, a giant vegetable specialist, who has won the title many times before. For more information on the latest shows, visit www.flowershow.org.uk.
