Making good use of Cumbrian fleece leftovers in the garden

Based in Cumbria, owner Jonathan Tebb Roger has a strong agricultural and horticultural background. The family even has a rescue tup called Lazarus! Jonathan realised that wool had become an undervalued resource, replaced mainly by oil-based man-made fibres. Sourcing raw leftover wool shreds from local farmers, Woolch is of great use to the gardener. What would normally be waste from fleeces now has a valuable life, closing the production loop.

Woolch is made from 100 per cent Cumbrian sheep fleece in a 50-litre recyclable paper bag which can also be composted. There is some added Biochar as a soil ‘sweetener’. Used as a mulch, it covers 3m2. Ideally target individual plants or rows of established salad and vegetables and as a pot topper.
Mulching has many benefits for the gardener – read more about my advice. Woolch makes a wonderful weed suppressor, removing competition for young plants so they get established more easily. It insulates the soil during winter and reduces the need for watering, especially for pot plants.
Slug and snail deterrent
It’s light, clean and easy to handle, breaking down naturally over time to benefit the soil. And most of all, when first laid, it proves a good slug and snail repellant – they don’t like the texture.
To use Woolch natural garden mulch, place around established plants in the ground or pots, to a depth of 5cm. Water lightly after application to bed in. Target individual plants or rows of established salad and vegetables and as a pot topper.
