Watch out for my trials of Vegetable & Fruit Topsoil and SuperSoil
I have to confess that I didn’t think there was much difference in bought topsoil but The Real Soil Company topsoils are a class apart.
Where most of us now check bags of multi-purpose compost scrupulously, topsoil escapes our scrutiny. When something looks this good on paper (or screen), then I have to check it out. I’ll be trialling both Vegetable & Fruit Topsoil and Supersoil later this year in raised beds.

However, did you know that:
- A typical bag of garden centre/DIY store topsoil can have a high sand content? Some bestselling topsoils are little more than 80 per cent sand and 20 per cent compost. The Real Soil Company topsoils are nutrient-dense, enriched organic topsoils and nothing else.
- Natural topsoil is heavier than manufactured topsoil. If a bag has more than 25 litres, you are unlikely to be buying natural topsoil.
- In recent tests, SuperSoil retained 94 per cent more water than a market-leading manufactured soil.
Vegetable & Fruit Topsoil
This 100 per cent natural topsoil is enhanced with 100 per cent natural, organic compost that is PAS100 certified. It is completely peat-free, with no added chemicals or artificial fertilisers.
This means that:
- Plants grow better and establish themselves quicker.
- Crops are more resilient to pests and diseases.
- Edibles are nutritionally enhanced, healthier and provide a better yield.
- Soil is organic with high consistency and resilience.
The Real Soil Company topsoils – SuperSoil
Another 100 per cent natural topsoil, with a completely natural, organic single-source plant derived enhancer. This meets higher environmental, physical and nutritional standards than is specified in BS3882. Developed, tested and proven by the latest in soil research, it’s the perfect topsoil for the eco-friendly, organic gardener.
SuperSoil contains:
- Phosphorus (P): Needed for respiration and growth, contributing to the structural strength and quality of healthy plants, encouraging root growth. Phosphorus is key in transforming solar energy into functioning compounds.
- Potassium (K): Essential for respiration and photosynthesis. Vital for growth and development, without which, plants would be stunted.
- Magnesium (Mg): Vital for photosynthesis.
- Organic Matter: Improves the structure of the soil, water retention and drought tolerance.
- Sand/Silt/Clay Content: Affects the mechanical handling properties of the soil.
