Two of the three new varieties bred by Alan Postill
Hillier Garden Centres has unveiled three new additions to its plant range, including two varieties bred by Alan Postill, one of the UK’s greatest plant breeders.
This year’s selection features both flowering and foliage plants suitable for gardens and planters:
Hillier Garden Centres – Erysimum Colour Vibe Purple
The Erysimum Colour Vibe collection was launched in 2023 in red and orange. This year, Hillier has added a purple variety that blooms from March into early summer. This hardy plant is a statement piece with its strong clear colour and large flowers. It is ideal for containers and garden borders.
Developed by Hillier expert plantsman, Charles Carr, it grows to 50cm x 50cm. Plants thrive in most free-draining soils and prefer full sun to light shade. Each plant costs £13.99 (available online and in centres now).

Mahonia eurybracteata subsp ganpinensis Meteor
Quite a mouthful! Mahonia eurybracteata subsp, ganpinensis Meteor is a beautiful evergreen shrub. Bred by Alan Postill, this Mahonia features architectural foliage that is deep red when young, turning to lush dark green. It produces upright spires of bold yellow flowers from late August to November. They light up the garden like meteors, hence the name.
The striking flowers provide a superb late nectar source for pollinators. Next, plants bear blue/black berries that birds love. suitable for borders or large pots, it is a compact, naturally branching shrub that likes well-draining soil. Price £19.99 (available online and in centres).

Hillier Garden Centres – Chaenomeles speciosa Lemon Sorbet
Chaenomeles speciosa Lemon Sorbet, an ornamental quince, was also bred by Alan Postill. It bears very large semi-double flowers that open in a captivating green colour during Spring and again in Autumn. These fade to yellow and white, followed by large green fruits. The variety is almost thornless and self-branching, ideal for growing as a loose or wall shrub. This plant grows well in full sun or dappled shade. It provides an early food source for pollinators.
